The Church & Nation Committee keeps under critical surveillance contemporary trends, movements and controversial issues in public life and studies these in the light of our church's authoritative standards. It does this in order to both provide guidance to the church about these issues and also promote our church's positions on such matters in the public sphere.
The Committee may have matters referred to it by Assembly or may initiate matters itself, their findings and recommendations being reported to the Assembly each year. If matters of public interest arise suddenly the Committee may act between meetings of the Assembly.
Another role which the Committee undertakes is that of advising the Moderator in composing and issuing pastoral letters and public statements other than those authorised by the Assembly.
